"A Homeowners Dream" The Daniels Corporation has been trying to establish a way to allow low-income individuals to accomplish homeownership for years. This began with their potential collaboration with Peel Affordable Housing, a grass roots non-profit organization working to facilitate affordable housing to marginalized individuals living in poverty or below the national poverty line. I was among the lucky individuals who witnessed the birth of the first Daniels development built in Mississauga – Kimbermount to my present abode located in Brampton.  “We couldn’t be happier about our Daniels FirstHome™!” After a two-year stint in Japan, my husband and I returned to Canada, opting to live with my parents so we could save for our own home. In 2010, we heard about Destination Drive Phase 2. We didn’t do much research at the time; after seeing photos of previous lineups and a lot of “hearsay” about people camping out “for weeks”, we didn’t pursue it further. Then, after reading the stories of those who were able to make their dreams of homeownership a reality, we realized that could’ve been us! When we heard about the next community, Long Valley, we made a decision to do everything we could to get our home. We did a lot of research on the internet, following the FirstHome™ Facebook page and reading about others’ experiences. We also talked to as many people as we could who had experience with previous Daniels Communities. The most important message we came away with was to keep an eye out on our inbox, and to stay positive. The day the e-mail announcing the Long Valley sale date was sent, I went straight to the site after work, where I found a line had already started. For two and a half weeks, we “checked in” twice a day; a great system that allowed potential buyers to maintain their spot in line without having to actually “camp out”. During that time, we got to know the people in line (our potential neighbours!) as well as the Daniels team, who were very informative and encouraging. As sale day got closer, we found our position in line steadily getting better. By sale day, we had moved up to #72. Before we knew it, it was our turn to select our home. Our 1st choice (2 bedroom + den condo) had all been chosen already, but we were able to get our 2nd choice, a 2 bedroom condo with a huge living/dining room and 3 balconies… the perfect space for our little family, with plenty of room to play for our 2 year old daughter. I have always wanted to own my own home. When I found Daniels I knew it can happen. I registered and waited for the announcement of the sale. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy as my friends prepared me for line ups. I was willing to do whatever it took to get my first place. I got the email about the sale and I knew my life was about to change. The next morning I got a number in line. I was shocked to hear that there was a line already and even more so when I found out I was #80. I didn’t think I had a shot. Roll calls began right away. For two weeks we gathered twice a day to keep our number in line. After 2 weeks the calls became more frequent; in fact so frequent that 3 days before the sale a few of us camped out in the garages. By doing this I got to know a lot of my new neighbors who now I consider very good friends. On the day of sale we were all very nervous. At this point we had seen the suites and picked out our favorites. I had one suite in mind since the second I saw it and I was hoping to get it. I was #54 in line on the day of sale and to my great surprise I got my first choice. I cannot even explain the emotions I felt that day. I realized that a new chapter has begun for me with Daniels and I couldn’t be happier. 7 months later here I sit in my beautiful condo writing this story. Buying a Daniels home was one of the best experiences of my life and I would do it all again. The Daniels team was a great group of people who were always there to answer your questions (no matter how many you had and we had many), they were friendly, approachable and very knowledgeable. I make sure I visit them at each new sale to keep in touch and catch up. If you’re thinking of buying a new home Daniels is the place to be. You will Love Where You Live! |
